Sunday

Hanging around, skimming the papers, making bread, getting exercise, tamping down impatience and doing chores; carrying on with reading Brautigan, I have finished his pseudo-noir story and gone on with The Hawkline Monster. Not quite sure what his game plan is, but I'll keep with it. The Angela Carter stories are very strange, and will take some effort. Gave my mother the collected short stories of Wallace Stegner, which she's enjoying very much.

When we moved from California, we lightened our book collection considerably. But we held on to "In Watermelon Sugar" and "Rommel Drives Deep Into Egypt"-- just couldn't part with Brautigan. I've read two Stegner novels, but not his short stories. Do you recommend them? I loved "Angle of Repose" and "Crossing to Safety."

Oh, Robin, I liked those Stegner novels, too. I haven't read his short fiction yet, but I do have a collection of his non-fiction, called The Fall of the Sparrow; lots of stuff about environmental issues, it's very good. He was an early environmentalist, especially with regards to the gorgeous places in Utah that have been eroded by road-building over the past 50 years.
