Urbanized exercise

Off in search of smoother foods for an aging throat; there's a PCC branch not far from here, down a big hill, which usually has more options than the local supermarket. The neighborhood it's in was thronged with people, some almost Fellini-esque in their garb, evidently from striving to met some fashion standards from another dimension. Maybe the Sunday Market drew them, although they didn't look as if they'd buy anything at the various clothing vendors in the street market: Lots of women in very thick facial make up, all different ages; guys in odd layerings of leggings and shirts, accessorized with messenger bags; and one young woman, in a little black dress with not much material in front to support her breasts, walked along shoving them back into the dress. Her two male companions seemed vaguely intrigued. Lots of loud whining about buying stuff filled the air. It was a relief to get to the used book store, where no such people were around.

We stopped to use the facilities in Texarkana on our trip home yesterday...Walmart seemed the appropriate place. As we passed a young black woman who was serving as a cashier, I remarked to my wife that the scene in front of us could have come from the bar scene in Star Wars. The woman's makeup was multi-layered and truly bizzare. Brilliant purples and silvers and golds weren painted around her eyes, from which sprang eyelashes at least 4 inches long. Her hair was orange and purple and fire-engine red and was twisted like a rope on top of her head. The makeup on her cheeks and chin made her face look oddly "bubbly," as if she wanted to look like a creature from another galaxy, far, far away. Oh, vanilla-flavored banana smoothies are good for aging throats, I'm told.

Whoa. Well, I guess it's not just a global village these days, it's an intergalactic one!
Thanks for the tip about easier to swallow food. We've switched from thin sliced fresh apples to apple sauce for a bit here.

I haven't seen anything like the people you and Musings from Myopia describe. I think they haven't made it to Port Townsend yet, or at least not into the Food Coop. Yikes. It sounds scary out there.
