Good byes

School starts early in Idaho, especially the universities - as on Monday - so off our visitors had to go. As they drove away, it finally started to rain. We'd had fun at the playground nearby, and the rain had held off in a spectacular way. We had had a rough night, as the daughter of some neighbors had a bunch of swilling boys over on Friday night while her parents were gone, and they made plenty of noise until around three A.M. Next time I'm calling the police, and letting them know there are likely some underage drinkers whooping it up. Stupid little gits. And you can bet we'll never hear any apologies from these people. We're off now to get a little walk.

I like your description of the rain holding off. Here on Tiger Mountain, once the rain began, the fog and drizzle was spectacular, too. Our flowers know the difference between rainwater and tap.

Swilling boys are ubiquitous on college towns. For some reason, they feel obligated to carry on the traditions of our youthful indiscretions. This doesn't make it right, but I think the ultimate solution is to remove the drinking age and let them have it. Prohibition didn't work, nor does it work for under-age types. If it's readily available, it removes the mystery and that sense of forbiddingness that drives young bucks to binge.

Maybe so, Babette. I do wonder, though, at what gets in the rain as it falls through all the polluted air...

Yes, 'spike, I know, but when it screws up your peace, it's not so shrug-off-able. In the USA, lowering the drinking age would probably leads to far more drunk driving problems, even if it took away the cachet of indescretion.

I don't know if lowering the age would lead to more drunk driving, more than it would to demystify the whole shebang...and making it legal would put the onus of responsibility on the parents who open their homes to it.

Even so, the number of kids that drink, then get behind the wheel after binging scares the bejezus about of me....perhaps we do two things - lower the drinking age, and up the age for getting your license to drive?

'spike, that last idea might be a good approach. It's hard for me to sympathize with them, since I never drank much in my teens or twenties.
